What is the Best Way for YOU to Recruit?

At ApplicantOne, we work with many different industries who must recruit new hires in a myriad of ways. If you’re familiar with us at all then you know that we don’t believe in “one size fits all.” Not all industries or companies operate the same way - It takes a lot of trial and error at times to find that shoe that just fits right. For instance, the ways in which an engineering company with one role would recruit, differs from a call center with multiple, revolving roles. We enlisted the help of one of our Senior Recruiters: Nathan Lewis to give us a breakdown of 5 popular industries and the best ways for them to recruit for those open roles.

**These are our personal thoughts/opinions. This is not the end-all, be all for recruiting.**

Engineering - When speaking to Nathan, he told us that typically, when recruiting in the engineering industry a contract agreement with a certain percentage down is the best avenue to take. Why? This is due to technical aspects of the role(s). Typically, positions like this only have 1-2 positions max, not a whole cluster, making a month-to-month engagement less than ideal. Additionally, engineers must be proficient in multiple software platforms and when a recruiter recruits for these positions, it’s important that the candidates are familiar with these platforms and is a great fit - which takes time due to the complexity. These roles tend to be difficult to place as a good engineer is hard to find especially if it’s a high-paying role. You’re dealing with high salaries, negotiations, benefits packages, travel, etc - it’s going to take some time. Quality over quantity, right?

Car Dealers - Those in the automotive industry, specifically car salesmen, benefit from a year round search agreement, due to high turnover in the industry and the large staff that dealerships typically have. In Nathan’s experience, typically there’s a high turnover rate in this industry anywhere from 3-6 months, which makes this a great industry for that month-to-month or annual recruiting services. It can also take quite a bit of time, especially if multiple roles open up! This is the kind of industry where it’s a smart idea to reach out to multiple people with various sales backgrounds to get as many people interested as possible.

Call Center - Call Center/Customer Service type jobs are similar to those car salesman positions. They have a high turnover rate, according to Nathan this spikes after 1-2 week training classes, which opens up the opportunity for constant hiring. He says: “Year round search is the ideal recruiting tactic, as call centers have large classes of new candidates they train each month, and a higher turnover rate. The best way to do so? By calling potential candidates, not just emailing to grasp an idea of their phone skills.”

Sales - Yet again, another instance where a month by month, in-depth search could be the best avenue. This is due to the fact that a salesperson wants to know what they are selling, the structure of commission, how they will be trained on the product they sell, and what their territory will be. Nathan says: “recruiting for sales men is a month-by-month endeavor because oftentimes there are things in the job description that might change. Such as: commission structure or base salary, restructuring of territories, special negotiations that a candidate might want to make with the client.”

Directors -These roles take a lot of conversation and bartering, due to higher salaries and benefits packages, and often relocation needs. Director positions by far take the longest to recruit for. These individuals are leaders who have very special skill sets and negotiation between candidate and client is key. There are often factors such as: advanced compensation packages, stock-options, merit based vacation packages, travel days per month, & gauging the candidate’s communicative skills and how that relates to a client’s leadership.
